There will come a time in your adult life where either a plug will need fixing, a fuse will burn out or a lightbulb will explode. You will need to get your tools out, assess the issue and fix it yourself. DIY work is something we all have to learn in our adult lives and it is something which we can spend a long time learning how to do as we grow up. For electrical work, in particular, there are risks involved, so here are some tips to stay safe and smart during your work.

Be careful

When you are looking into rewiring part of your Home, you can’t just jump in gung-ho and hope for the best. Electrical work is sensitive and needs to be done with care, so you need to make sure that to approach the situation with gloves on and with caution. Take a proper look at what you are dealing with before you try to move anything and then prepare the tools you need so that you can do it properly.

Know when you need to rewire

Learning how to carry out electrical work is no different to anything else in your home, you need to learn through experience and likely learn through mistakes. After a long while, you will start to recognise whether the home needs wiring work or not, and this can be down to the age of the wiring and the state of your Home too. Think about whether the wiring is outdated and you should know if you need to replace it or not.

Plan it out

Make sure that you plan out your work before you start off. You will need to buy everything you need for the job, keep your equipment on hand and prepare the station for work. You will want to turn off the electrical supply to certain parts of the house to make sure that no wires are live, check where your wires run and then get started with your work. Make sure you have plenty of space out for your work.

Don’t add jobs part way through

Just like you would if you were to get an electrician working for you, you would want them to check their electrical pricing software and add-on jobs part way through and charge you extra. Adding more jobs to your current work can take a lot of time, effort and it will cost you more. Stick to the job you are currently doing and then if you think you need something else doing you can plan this out for another time. When you add on jobs in one sitting it can become confusing and you are much more likely to make a mistake.

Future proof it

If you are looking into bringing some technology into the Home such as colour changing lights and other techs, you need to be sure that the electrics in your house will stand up to the test. You need to think about bringing in some up to date cables and wiring into the house before you consider buying new gadgets, and this will allow your home to stand the test of time and stay up to date.

Move out

If you know that the wiring hadn’t been completed in your house for the last 20 years, then you may be better off having the whole house rewired to make sure it stays good for the next decade or so. This is a big job to do, and for the ease of your working, it might be a good idea to move out of the house for a week or so while the job is being done. It will save you a lot of messing around and it means that the job will be completed much more quickly for you.

Get to know your electrician

If you are hiring an electrician to do your home, you can think about getting to know them a bit beforehand and trying to make them happy. This just makes your relationship better and it also makes sure that you are able to talk to them during the job and hopefully get a lower quote if you can. Trusting the person who will be doing the job is also incredibly important so this can also be a reason why it is great for you to get to know them before the job.

Do it yourself

If you are on a budget and you know a thing or two about electrical work. You can always do the job yourself and save a lot of money on an electrician. Never risk a huge job if you aren’t sure, however, think about the jobs which you can do yourself because it will be quicker and there is no need to call an electrician if it’s only to rewire a plug!

Know your costs

There are always costs to rewiring your home, and you need to work out whether it will be better for you to try and do the job yourself by buying everything at the store or letting a professional come in and cover all of those costs for you. It depends on the size of the task and the complexity, but make sure you take the time to look at prices.

Know your timings

The time it takes for electrical works to be carried out can vary by a huge amount, so it is always worth you checking how long a job will take so that you can work around it. For jobs which will only take an afternoon or two, you can stay in the house and it shouldn’t be an issue for you. However, if you are to be working for a few days or even a week, you can think about maybe moving into your parents' house or with a friend while the work is carried out. Once you know how long your jobs will take you can think about preparing your life around it for a few days.
