The BC3 Education Foundation, Inc. awards over $176,000 in student scholarships

(Butler, PA) The Butler County Community College Education Foundation, Inc. awarded $176,600 to BC3 students for the 2014-2015 academic year. Scholarships range from $250 to full-tuition. A total of 38 students received the Presidents Scholarship this year which is the largest in the College’s 50-year history.

The Presidents Scholarship awards full-tuition to students who graduate from a Butler County Public High School in the top 10% of their class and are a Butler County resident.

“The increase in top achieving students who select BC3 reflects the solid reputation of our academic programs and the ease with which students are able to transfer credits to four year colleges,” said Dr. Francie Spigelmyer, Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Both students and donors have a growing interest in two-year programs that prepare students for jobs in the regional workforce. In 2013, the Glenn R. and Rhea J. McCandless Logan Scholarship was established for Butler County students enrolled in one of BC3’s 30 occupational programs. Endowed with a $250,000 gift from the Logan Foundation, this scholarship was designed to provide opportunities for students who want to enter the workforce immediately after graduation from BC3. 

Created to honor or memorialize individuals, endowed scholarships have increased in recent years. Generous donors see endowed scholarships as a way to both assist students and grow a local, educated workforce. Named endowed scholarships can benefit students with special interests or achievements such as the Eagle Scout or Girl Scout Gold Award.

The BC3 Education Foundation, Inc. awards scholarships annually. The application is open to all students and available online from April 15 to July 1 at bc3.edu/scholarships.
