Denver School of Nursing’s (DSN) Student Nurse Association (SNA) hosted a day-long blood donation drive for the Bonfils Blood Center and student efforts helped the blood center realize donations in excess of projections, said Dr. Marcia Bankirer, president of DSN (www.denverschoolofnursing.edu).

Every day, nearly 200 hospitals and healthcare facilities across Colorado and in the Rocky Mountain region rely solely on Bonfils Blood Center for blood products, requiring Bonfils to collect nearly 3,000 blood donations each week. One single blood donation can save and enhance the lives of up to three patients.

In the SNA-sponsored drive in July, 29 units were collected at the DSN site, which will help over 85 patients in the community, according to Michelle Lowry, community donor representative for Bonfils.

“We very much appreciate the participation of DSN staff and students.  It was also exciting to have 17 first-time donors among those participating.  We came in over projections which is very helpful to our inventory at this time,” Lowry said.
