Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair says Britain needs to figure out a way to discourage its citizens from joining the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
"These people aren't going because they're mistreated back in the U.K.," he said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union." "They’re given the benefit of free education, free health care. They get all of the benefits that come with the freedom of living in Britain. These people have been subject to an ideology that has come in from abroad that, unfortunately, is not just limited in Britain but is right around the world today."
That ideology is based on a "complete perversion" of the proper faith of Islam, Blair said.
"But it is powerful," he said. "It is preached by people in mosques ... not just in countries like Pakistan and parts of the Middle East and Africa, but parts of Britain as well."
