Fundraisers go Over the Edge for Hattie Larlham
- Written by Editor

On Aug. 30, 2014, 61 fundraisers went Over the Edge for Hattie Larlham, rappelling 22 stories of the PNC Center building in downtown Akron. The event raised more than $140,000 for people with developmental disabilities at Hattie Larlham and generated widespread community engagement. Each Over the Edge rappeller raised a minimum of $1,500 to participate in the event. More than 800 donors contributed to the various rappellers in support of Hattie Larlham. Additionally, 25 local organizations sponsored the event.
“Over the Edge for Hattie Larlham has strengthened our ties with the community,” said Hattie Larlham CEO Dennis Allen. “It’s truly amazing to see the resources that made this event possible.”
The nonprofit organization collaborated with organizations to make Over the Edge for Hattie Larlham possible, including Cascade Plaza Associates which donated the PNC Center building; The City of Akron accommodated the event’s street fair and the Akron General Health & Wellness Centers offered Over the Edge fundraisers practice rappel sessions.
“This is the kind of thing Mrs. Larlham would have been really proud of,” said Mike Weinhardt, Hattie Larlham Care Group president and treasurer. “She pushed the envelope for people with developmental disabilities and we are pushing the envelope on this fundraising activity.”
On Aug. 29, 2014, the day before the event, local celebrities rappelled to raise awareness for people with developmental disabilities. Among the V.I.P. rappellers were Ohio Senator Frank LaRose, 1420 WHK Radio Host Jim McIntyre, WEWS NewsChannel 5 Meteorologist Trent Magill, Hattie Larlham Care Group Member and Over the Edge Chair Dan Glessner, Hattie Larlham Vice President of Vocational & Enterprise Services Dotty Grexa and representatives from PNC Bank.
“This is a worthwhile organization,” said Bill Soule, assistant to Mayor Don Plusquellic for community relations. “We do want to make sure we support this effort.”
“Hattie Larlham is really doing wonderful compassionate work for the people of our community,” said Ohio Senator Frank LaRose. “This is a cause I’m more than happy to support and I’m so glad that all of you are out here to support it as well.”
