Eighteen children across the country have died this year from being left unattended in a locked or closed vehicle. Despite repeated warnings of the dangers of leaving children in cars and national news coverage of these tragedies, parents continue to make this mistake. Technology is available to help prevent these deaths. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises parents to always check the back seat when they leave their cars and not to rely exclusively on technology, but experts say these devices are a smart step in making sure a child never gets left behind.
Baby Alert USA’s Childminder SoftClip® System is one of the products available to help prevent hot car deaths. A just-in-case safety device parents can easily install on their child’s infant or convertible car seat, the recently relaunched system features a higher quality clip system with easier installation, a longer battery life and improved technology. Baby Alert USA launched the updated version of the ChildMinder SoftClip® Systemin April to provide parents a child-left-behind warning system that alerts them, or their caregivers, if their child has been left in his or her car seat in the back seat of a car. When the SoftClip® System is fastened, the system's key chain alarm sounds within 8 seconds if the parent or caregiver move more than 15 feet from the child in his car seat.

The fathers behind Baby Alert USA invested in the product to provide parents a solution to a tragedy that's far too common. Heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash-related fatalities for children 14 and younger. Between 1998 and 2013, 606 children died due to heatstroke. Of these deaths, 52% were the result of children being forgotten in vehicles. How can parents forget their kids in the back seat? The safety advocacy group KidsandCars.org faults memory failure due to lack of sleep, hormone changes, stress and changes to normal routine. The danger lies in the factors that make children in cars extremely vulnerable to heatstroke: 1. Children’s body temperatures rise three - five times faster than adults; 2. Cars are like greenhouses and rolling down a window does little to keep them cool; 3. On an 80-degree day, a car can reach deadly levels in just 10 minutes.

On Thursday, July 31, 2014, Baby Alert USA will join the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Safe Kids Worldwide in raising awareness of the dangers of leaving kids in cars and help introduce parents to the technology available to help prevent hot car deaths.
