IgE is important in the development of allergic asthma, as it binds to mast cells and basophils, which play a significant role in the pathogenesis of asthma. IgE ultimately triggers the release of histamines, prostaglandins, and leukotrienes, which produce airway inflammation and obstruction. Anti-IgE therapy is designed to block IgE at the beginning of its cascade. Roche is already an established player in the biological segment of the asthma market, and this is its second biological pipeline product entering late-phase development.
