Oprah: the Queen of Positioning?
- Written by Russell Pearson

At the 2018 Golden Globe awards this week, Oprah Winfrey gave an acceptance speech that sees her positioning herself for a career in politics.
Competitive Business Strategist, Russell Pearson says "There is a lot we business owners can learn by watching the moves that Oprah makes. Positioning in business is about reading the environment and positioning yourself to take advantage of the situation. Through design or simply, just by being Oprah, she's reading the social environment and creating a leadership position for herself".
The host of the Golden Globes, Seth Meyers, began the evening with an opening monologue that included a suggestion that Oprah should be the next U.S. President. Later in the event, while accepting the Cecil B Demille award, Oprah proclaimed "a new dawn is on the horizon!".
Russell went on to say "Oprah may well be positioning herself for the next U.S. Presidency. The 3 keys to positioning are Audience, Competitors, and Environment. Much like Trump did back in 2016, she seems to be taking advantage of each of these to engage the community".
It will be fascinating to watch what happens next as we head toward a 2020 political opportunity for Oprah, but as Russell points out, "The value for us is in taking the lessons from these celebrities on the big stage and learning how to apply the same sort of positioning in our own business environment".
