Over the past few months, Australia has seen a huge surge in demand for electric vehicles. The biggest cause for this is the fuel crisis that arose as a result of the unrest in the Middle East. This increase in demand has unfortunately revealed gaps in the charging infrastructure necessary to make the transition from petrol cars to electric vehicles a smooth one. On top of this, regional Australia is also experiencing a regional supply shortage. New owners are having to purchase their new electric vehicles in capital cities and have them shipped with
interstate car transport companies at great expense.

A shift in the right direction

According to the Electric Vehicle Council of Australia, electric vehicles are now 16% of all vehicles sales made around the country. This is a huge surge in interest, and can mostly be attributed to the exorbitant fuel prices seen around the world. After the unrest in the Middle East increased this February, Australians are turning towards electric vehicles and trying to take advantage of government subsidies that should make the transition a bit cheaper.

The gaps we need to fill

This new surge in interest has unfortunately made the gaps in the charging infrastructure necessary for making that transition from petrol to electric that much smoother. Australian currently has 1300 public charging stations and just over 4000 fast charging plugs. Experts have estimated that we need tens of thousands of charging points – which equates to about 30,000 plugs just in New South Wales – to properly support the increasing number of electric vehicles on the road. State bodies have concluded that for every 1000 electric vehicles on the road, roughly 17 charging points are required.

Another obstacle is the regional supply issue that has arisen. New owners from regional parts of the country are having to purchase their new electric vehicles from capital cities, and then use a car freight company to transport them. The fuel crisis means that the costs are incredible, so finding a company who will do it for an affordable price is becoming increasingly difficult.
