Cruz, Gillibrand team up on Hamas

Sens. Ted Cruz and Kirsten Gillibrand united on Monday to push a resolution condemning Hamas in its war against Israel, building on their burgeoning bipartisan alliance.
The resolution from the Texas Republican and New York Democrat strongly criticizes Hamas for using “innocent civilians as human shields,” tags Hamas and other terrorist groups with the blame for thousands of rocket attacks on Israel launched from Gaza and demands that Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Mahmoud Abbas condemn Hamas’s tactics.

“Hamas is undoubtedly guilty of violating international humanitarian law through its deliberate, repeated, and consistent use of civilians as human shields,”Cruz said. “The United States of America, along with the entire international community must expose and denounce Hamas’ barbaric tactics and unequivocally support Israel’s right to self-defense.”
Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) and Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) have filed a companion to Cruz and Gillibrand’s resolution in the House.
The resolution marks the second major partnership between the liberal Gillibrand and conservative Cruz. Last year Cruz and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) joined Gillibrand’s effort to take the military chain of command out of sexual assault investigations. That effort failed, 55-45, but the support of Paul and Cruz helped solidify the bipartisan nature of Gillibrand’s proposal....
